Bringing back akan traditions from ghana
Akan proverb
‘only the elephant can pull down the palm tree’
meaning the resilience of the tree, yet the elephant prevails through strength.
ABOUT PROJECT
The Akan bar is a small component taken from the 'Alkebu-lan Lifestyle store' project.
The Akan bar is a celebration of the traditional and religious values found in Ghana and eastern Ivory Coast. A combination of traditional golden ornaments and spiritual sculptures have been incorporated into a contemporary bar/lounge area to accommodate the the end users 'double conciousness'.
The chairs are inspired by Akan’s golden stool which in practice should not be sat on by anyone as it houses the owners spirit / a higher spirit, which is why I made a small element of the chair in gold from the Sankofa bird and dramatically modernised the design so that it doesn't look identical but does have some elements that are reminiscent of the golden stool. The Sankofa bird in Akan means to 'return back to heritage'.

Inspired by the beautiful Kente cloth designs, I took these geometrical shapes and experimented with wood models to create an acoustic ceiling within the bar area
